Tasting Notes
Nose: A captivating and complex nose, starting with a distinct maritime brininess typical of coastal Scotch, married with a subtle, sweet peat smoke. Beneath this, layers of orchard fruit emerge – green apples and ripe pears – intertwined with vanilla bean, honeyed malt, and a hint of dusty warehouse or antique leather. There's a mineralic quality, almost like wet stones, and a faint whisper of citrus zest.
Palate: The palate is robust and full-bodied, delivering on the nose's promise of delightful complexity. The higher proof is evident but well-integrated, providing a warming sensation without harshness. Initial flavors burst with rich malty sweetness, followed by a gentle peat smoke that's more medicinal and earthy than assertive. Orchard fruits continue, now joined by a touch of lemon curd and a nutty quality, perhaps almond or hazelnut. A creamy vanilla and caramel note develops, alongside a subtle peppery spice and a salinity that truly sets it apart. The oak influence is present but balanced, offering structure without dominating.
Finish: A long, lingering, and exceptionally satisfying finish. The peat smoke gracefully recedes, leaving behind a persistent sweet maltiness and a pleasant coastal saltiness. Notes of dark chocolate, black pepper, and ginger spice gradually fade, while a delicate fruit character resurfaces. The oak provides a dry, slightly tannic grip at the very end, encouraging another sip. A faint whisper of industrial oil or engine grease, characteristic of Campbeltown, can be detected on the very tail end, adding another layer of intrigue.
About the Distillery
Glengyle Distillery, resurrected in 2004, is one of only three distilleries in Campbeltown, a once-thriving whisky region. It shares management with the iconic Springbank Distillery, reflecting a commitment to traditional, hands-on production methods, including floor malting, and a distinctive oily, maritime character in its whiskies.
