Tasting Notes
Nose: A sophisticated and inviting bouquet, immediately revealing notes of rich dried fruits – think stewed plums, figs, and sultanas – intertwined with dark chocolate, polished antique oak, and a subtle hint of sticky toffee pudding. A delicate whisper of orange peel and ginger zest adds complexity, all underscored by an unmistakable deep sherry influence.
Palate: The entry is sumptuously rich and viscous, coating the palate with layers of intense fruitcake spices – nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. The sherry influence is profound but beautifully integrated, offering sweet notes of treacle, marzipan, and candied orange. There's a delightful interplay of nutty characteristics, perhaps toasted almonds and walnuts, balanced by a hint of dark espresso and robust, mature oak, without being overly tannic.
Finish: Long, warming, and exceedingly elegant. The fruit and spice linger, evolving into a lingering sweetness of dark honey and a final dry, satisfying complexity of old leather and a faint wisp of cocoa powder. The sherry casks leave a memorable, almost endless, echo of sustained richness and warmth.
About the Distillery
Glengoyne Distillery, established in 1833, stands proudly at the Highland Line, a geographic boundary that historically divides Scotland. Uniquely among Highland distilleries, Glengoyne exclusively air-dries its barley rather than using peat smoke, allowing the subtle, unhurried character of their spirit to shine through. Their commitment to patience is legendary, epitomized by their 'unhurried' philosophy and their dedication to maturing their whiskies in the finest sherry casks.
