Tasting Notes
Nose: A sophisticated ballet of tropical fruit and deep maritime air. Initial notes of ripe mango, passionfruit, and candied orange peel intermingle with a bracing whisper of sea spray, brine, and just a hint of medicinal iodine. Beneath, a rich, earthy peat smoke emerges, softened by old leather, polished oak, and a delicate floral perfume of heather and violet.
Palate: Luxuriously smooth and intensely complex, the palate opens with a wave of sweet honeyed malt, dark chocolate, and toasted nuts. The peat smoke, though ever-present, is refined and integrated, offering a gentle warmth rather than an aggressive assault. Layers of stewed dark fruits – plums, figs, and black cherries – merge with espresso, tobacco leaf, and a subtle salinity that echoes the coast. A delicate spice of black pepper and ginger weaves through, adding depth.
Finish: Long, lingering, and exceptionally elegant. The warmth of the peat smoke gently fades into a pleasant, drying oak tannin. Notes of dark chocolate, sea salt caramel, and a whisper of dried apricot remain, leaving a memorable impression of a truly aged Islay single malt. A final, smoky whisper trails off, leaving a desire for more.
About the Distillery
Bowmore Distillery, established in 1779 on the shores of Loch Indaal on the Isle of Islay, is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries. Known for its distinct peat-smoked single malt whiskies, Bowmore maintains a traditional approach, malting a portion of its own barley on-site. Its proximity to the sea deeply influences the character of its whiskies, imparting a unique maritime quality.
