Tasting Notes
Nose: A captivating and complex bouquet immediately unfolds. Initial notes of briny sea air, characteristic of Campbeltown, are intertwined with sweet orchard fruits β ripe apples, pears, and a hint of apricot. Underlying this are delicate floral whispers, particularly heather, alongside a subtle earthiness and a touch of well-aged oak, perhaps even a faint whiff of pipe tobacco. As it breathes, hints of vanilla custard, caramelized sugar, and a distant wisp of peat smoke emerge, suggesting a beautifully integrated maturation.
Palate: The palate arrives with a luscious, oily texture, coating the mouth wonderfully. The high proof is present but remarkably well-integrated, providing warmth without harshness. The maritime influence from the nose intensifies, presenting as salted caramel and a mineral tang. This is quickly followed by a delightful burst of sweet fruit β stewed apples, dried apricots, and a touch of candied orange peel. The long maturation in hogshead casks imparts notes of rich vanilla, toffee, and baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. There's a subtle, earthy peat smoke that weaves throughout, adding depth and complexity rather than overpowering. A faint nuttiness, reminiscent of almonds, surfaces towards the mid-palate.
Finish: The finish is exceptionally long, warm, and satisfying. The maritime and sweet fruit notes linger gracefully, with the gentle peat smoke gradually asserting itself more prominently, providing a smoky yet sweet and savory conclusion. Notes of dark chocolate, leather, and a faint brininess persist, leaving the palate refreshed and eager for another sip. The oak influence is beautifully balanced, providing structure without bitterness, culminating in a complex, evolving fade.
