Tasting Notes
Nose: A rich and inviting bouquet of caramelized sugar, dark cherry pie, and dried apricot, intertwined with classic Wild Turkey rye spice. Hints of well-aged leather, pipe tobacco, and a subtle earthy complexity emerge, underpinned by a warm, toasted oak presence. A delicate floral note, like dried rose petals, appears with a moment of air.
Palate: The entry is robust and full-bodied, delivering a powerful wave of sweet vanilla bean, butterscotch, and dark chocolate. The rye spice quickly follows, providing a pleasant peppery kick that balances the sweetness. Mid-palate, notes of mature oak, roasted nuts, and a touch of roasted coffee develop, along with dried dark fruits like fig and raisin. The barrel proof amplifies the flavors without overwhelming the palate, leading to a satisfying warmth.
Finish: A long, lingering finish that is warm and spicy, with a beautiful interplay of sweet oak and black pepper. The caramel and vanilla notes persist, slowly fading into a dry, leathery, and earthy conclusion. A wisp of smoky charcoal and a pleasant bitterness from the aged oak provide excellent depth and character, encouraging another sip.
About the Distillery
Wild Turkey Distillery, nestled in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, boasts a storied history dating back to 1869, though the 'Wild Turkey' name became prominent in the 1940s. Under the legendary guidance of Master Distiller Jimmy Russell, and later his son Eddie Russell, the distillery is renowned for its commitment to traditional bourbon production methods, including aging in heavily charred new American oak barrels and bottling at often higher proofs, contributing to its bold and distinctive character.
