New Riff's 6-Year-Old Malted Rye offers a magnificent convergence of two distinct worlds. This barrel-proof expression, aged for six years and then thoughtfully finished in both Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, unveils a profoundly complex and harmonious symphony of rich malt, dark fruit, and spice, bottled without chill filtration to preserve its authentic character.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Initial waves of deep, dark fruit – figs, raisins, and prunes – mingle with rich toffee and baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. A subtle undertone of malty sweetness, reminiscent of shortbread or digestive biscuits, provides complexity, while a whisper of oak char and leather hints at its age. The sherry influence is pronounced but well-integrated, not overpowering the malted rye's intrinsic character.
Palate: A viscous, mouth-coating entry immediately delivers an explosion of flavor. The malted rye asserts itself with notes of dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and a delightful spicy kick – black pepper, caraway, and a touch of cloves. This is beautifully complemented by the dried fruit and wine characteristics from the Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez casks: sweet sherry and macerated cherries intertwine with a creamy vanilla and brown sugar richness. The barrel proof strength is evident but remarkably smooth, providing a pleasant warmth rather than an aggressive burn.
Finish: Long, lingering, and complex. The sweet sherry notes fade into a sustained warmth of roasted oak and dark cocoa. The spicy rye returns in a gentle wave, leaving a peppery tingle that slowly transforms into a sweeter, malty aftertaste with hints of marzipan and roasted coffee beans. The absence of chill filtration ensures a satisfying, oily mouthfeel that persists.
