Experience the revival of Campbeltown with Kilkerran Single Malt, a captivating Scotch Whisky from Glengyle Distillery. Matured in oak and bottled at 46% ABV, this non-age statement release offers a complex interplay of coastal smoke, orchard fruits, and a distinctive maritime character, perfect for the discerning whisky enthusiast.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Initial notes of sea salt and brine are immediately apparent, intertwined with a gentle whisper of peat smoke β reminiscent of a distant bonfire on a windswept beach. Underlying these maritime elements are sweeter undertones of green apples, lemon zest, and a hint of vanilla bean. As it opens up, a subtle nuttiness, perhaps roasted almonds, emerges with a touch of damp earth and hay.
Palate: The palate is surprisingly rich and oily despite the 46% ABV. The peat smoke is more pronounced here, a clean, coastal smoke rather than medicinal. It's balanced beautifully by a wave of sweet malt, butterscotch, and orchard fruits like ripe pears and tart gooseberries. A peppery spice develops mid-palate, along with a mineralic quality and a touch of oak tannins, suggesting a well-integrated maturation. There's a pleasant creamy texture that coats the mouth.
Finish: The finish is long and warming, with the lingering maritime smoke gracefully fading into notes of black pepper, sea salt, and a soft, dry oak. The fruit sweetness returns subtly towards the very end, leaving a pleasant, slightly saline and peaty aftertaste. Itβs remarkably clean and refreshing for a malt with this complexity.
