Tasting Notes
Nose: Initial waves of classic Bowmore peat smoke, robust and earthy, quickly intertwining with maritime salinity and notes of briny air. Underneath, a delicate layer of ripe orchard fruits – baked apple and poached pear – emerges, accented by hints of lemon zest, vanilla bean, and a subtle floral quality. As it opens, a whisper of old leather and damp forest floor adds complexity.
Palate: A powerful yet elegant arrival, delivering a rich tapestry of flavors. The peat smoke is assertive but beautifully balanced by a creamy sweetness, reminiscent of salted caramel and dark chocolate. Intermingled are flavors of exotic spices – black pepper, nutmeg, and a touch of ginger – alongside dried apricots and figs. A mineralic tang, like wet stones, underscores the maritime influence. The refill butt aging allows the distillery character to shine through, showcasing Bowmore's signature violas and violets.
Finish: Long, warming, and exceptionally lingering. The peat smoke gradually recedes, leaving a comforting warmth and a persistent interplay of sweet and savory. Notes of ash, sea salt, and tobacco leaf slowly fade, giving way to a final delicate sweetness of honeyed malt and a hint of medicinal iodine. The oak influence is present but well integrated, contributing a dry spice at the very end.
About the Distillery
Bowmore Distillery, established in 1779 on the Isle of Islay, is one of Scotland's oldest distilleries. Known for its distinctively smoky and maritime character, Bowmore malts are often described as having a 'perfumed' peat smoke and a unique floral elegance. They utilize traditional floor maltings and warehouse their casks in the legendary No. 1 Vaults, one of the world's oldest maturation warehouses.
