Tasting Notes
Nose: A sophisticated ballet of dried fruits, dark chocolate, and roasted nuts immediately greets the nose, underpinned by a rich, sweet sherry influence. Subtle hints of old leather, pipe tobacco, and a whisper of antique oak emerge, characteristic of its remarkable age. There's a delicate floral note, almost like dried heather, intertwining with a malty backbone and a touch of orange peel.
Palate: The first sip unveils a decadent and full-bodied experience. Rich Oloroso sherry notes explode on the palate, bringing stewed plums, figs, and raisins balanced by an elegant spice blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and a hint of ginger. The Fettercairn's tropical fruit character, often noted as papaya or mango, is beautifully integrated, now ripened and mellowed by age. Dark cocoa, espresso, and a faint earthiness add complexity, all enveloped in a velvety, mouth-coating texture from the unchill-filtered nature. A subtle, well-integrated oak tannin provides structure without bitterness.
Finish: The finish is exceptionally long, warm, and lingering, a true testament to its 19 years in wood and sherry influence. Sweet sherry notes gradually fade into a gentle procession of dark fruit, toasted almond, and a warming, spicy ember. A dry, slightly tannic oak presence emerges at the very end, leaving a pleasant, memorable afterglow of old leather and a faint whisper of smoke. The high proof is wonderfully integrated, offering warmth without harshness.
