Tasting Notes
Nose: A sophisticated and complex array of aromas, immediately hinting at its age and Highland Park origins. Initial notes of heather honey, dried fruits (apricot, fig, orange peel), and a delicate wisp of earthy peat smoke intermingle with maritime salinity. Subtle hints of beeswax, old leather, vanilla bean, and toasted oak emerge, indicating long maturation in quality casks. There's a faint floral sweetness, perhaps violet or rosehip, adding to its elegance.
Palate: The palate is remarkably smooth and coating for its proof, delivering a rich tapestry of flavors. The peat smoke is more pronounced than on the nose but remains well-integrated, more akin to smouldering embers than aggressive campfire. Sweetness arrives in waves of dark caramel, treacle, and brown sugar, balanced by a sharp, zesty citrus and a backbone of aged oak spice – cinnamon, nutmeg, and a hint of clove. Tropical fruit notes (mango, pineapple) emerge subtly, alongside a nutty richness (almond, walnut) and a mineralic, almost stony quality that speaks to its Highland Park lineage.
Finish: Long, lingering, and incredibly satisfying. The warmth of the alcohol is perfectly integrated, leaving a pleasant glow. The peat smoke gently recedes, replaced by persistent sweet spices, dark chocolate, and a final flourish of dried fruit. A coastal brininess and a subtle, almost ethereal honeyed sweetness remain on the palate, inviting another sip. The oak influence is present but never overpowering, showcasing a beautiful balance that only extended maturation can achieve.
About the Distillery
This particular expression originates from Highland Park, a renowned distillery located on the Orkney Islands, established in 1798. Known for its unique combination of local peat, sherry cask maturation, and traditional floor maltings, Highland Park consistently produces whiskies with a distinctive balance of heather smoke, sweetness, and maritime character. This bottling, however, was independently bottled by WM Cadenhead, Scotland's oldest independent bottler, celebrated for selecting exceptional single casks and small batches that highlight the distillery's true character.
