Tasting Notes
Nose: A profound and complex nose immediately greets you with rich caramel, dark roasted coffee beans, and aged leather, deeply intertwined with opulent dried fruits – figs, dates, and stewed prunes. A whisper of pipe tobacco and a delicate rose floral note emerge, hinting at the French oak influence, alongside classic baking spices of cinnamon and nutmeg. There’s an underlying earthy minerality, a testament to its age.
Palate: The entry is surprisingly soft and velvety, quickly building to a full-bodied crescendo. A wave of dark chocolate, toffee, and burnt sugar washes over the palate, followed by a vibrant burst of cherry and blackberry fruit. The dual oak influence becomes clear here, with sweet vanilla and creamy coconut from the American white oak, perfectly balanced by the sophisticated structure, fine-grained tannins, and subtle peppery spice from the French charred oak. A touch of marzipan and a faint smokiness linger.
Finish: The finish is exceptionally long and evolving, a true testament to its 18 years. It’s warm and satisfying, leaving a lingering impression of complex spice — clove, star anise, and a hint of ginger. The dark fruit and oak notes persist, slowly fading into a sweet, dry earthiness with a final, subtle whisper of dark cocoa powder and espresso. The higher proof keeps it lively without being aggressive.
