The seventh chapter of WhistlePig's Boss Hog series, Magellan's Atlantic, draws on Ferdinand Magellan's 1519 voyage, the first recorded trip around the world. Its cask journey also crosses continents. This straight rye spends 17 years in American oak. It then gets a short, intense finish in new Spanish oak from the mountain forests of northern Spain. After that, it crosses the Atlantic for a final rest in South American teakwood. WhistlePig's team has called it the least predictable edition they had made up to that point. Spanish oak is high in tannin and hard to work with, and exotic teakwood is rarely used for whiskey. Together they give this rye an aromatic, spice-forward character. Each bottle comes from a single barrel and is bottled at barrel strength. This bottle is 107.5 proof.
