From one of the oldest Highland distilleries comes a rare expression of Balblair's character. This 1999 single cask bottling, selected by The Whisky Exchange, showcases the distillery's signature fruit-forward style beautifully matured, offering a complex interplay of sweet orchard fruits, delicate spices, and creamy vanilla, all delivered at a robust 103.8 proof.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Initial waves of baked apple crumble dusted with cinnamon and nutmeg, followed by delicate floral notes of heather and gorse. Undertones of vanilla bean, sticky toffee pudding, and a faint maritime influence with a hint of saline and seasoned oak.

Palate: A rich, velvety texture coats the mouth, delivering a burst of caramelized orchard fruits—stewed pears and baked apples—intertwined with sweet malt and a touch of honey. Subtle spice emerges, including ginger, white pepper, and a gentle oak influence, complemented by creamy vanilla custard and a whisper of dark chocolate.

Finish: Long and warming, with lingering notes of sweet malt, dried fruits, and a pleasant, gentle spice. The oak resurfaces elegantly, accompanied by a hint of leather and a comforting warmth that slowly fades, leaving a sophisticated, slightly dry impression.

About the Distillery

Balblair Distillery, established in 1790 in the Northern Highlands, is one of Scotland's oldest working distilleries. Known for its 'vintage' approach, Balblair traditionally releases single malt whiskies identified by their distillation year rather than an age statement, aiming to bottle only when the whisky has reached its peak maturity. It prides itself on traditional production methods, using pure Highland water and a slow distillation process to create a distinctively rich and fruity spirit.
