The Balvenie RumCask, a rare 17 Year Old expression, unveils an extraordinary collaboration between Speyside tradition and Caribbean vibrancy. This pioneering release from Malt Master David Stewart elevates the distillery's signature honeyed malt with an exotic finish in carefully selected Jamaican rum barrels, creating a symphony of tropical fruit and delicate spice.
Tasting Notes
Nose: A captivating interplay of tropical fruit and classic Speyside malt. Bright notes of pineapple, mango, and ripe banana are interwoven with hints of vanilla fudge, honeyed malt, and a delicate ginger spice. A gentle oak presence emerges, carrying traces of toasted coconut and butterscotch. There’s a faint, alluring whisper of molasses and demerara sugar from the rum cask influence.
Palate: The palate arrives with a luscious, oily texture, immediately delivering a complex sweetness. Initial notes of candied orange peel, apricot, and rich butterscotch give way to a wave of exotic fruit – passionfruit, grilled pineapple, and hints of ripe plantain. The rum cask influence is beautifully integrated, offering depth with touches of brown sugar, nutmeg, and a subtle coffee bean character. The underlying Balvenie honeyed malt backbone remains prominent, providing balance against the fruit and spice.
Finish: Long, warm, and elegantly sweet. The tropical fruit notes linger, morphing into dried apricot and a spiced apple crumble. A gentle, dry oak and a whisper of dark chocolate emerge, joined by the persistent, comforting warmth of baking spices and a final, delicate kiss of vanilla and treacle from the rum.
