Most bourbon buyers learn brands. Fewer learn distilleries — which is backwards, because the distillery is where the whiskey actually comes from, and a single distillery's output often appears under a dozen different brand names at wildly different prices.
Learn the producers and the shelf stops being a wall of labels. Here's who makes what.
Buffalo Trace — Frankfort, Kentucky
Owned by the Sazerac Company, Buffalo Trace is the most consequential distillery in modern bourbon, largely because it produces a disproportionate share of the most allocated bottles in the category.
The mash bills. Buffalo Trace works from a small number of recipes and doesn't publish exact percentages. The industry-understood structure is:
- Mash Bill #1 — lower rye. Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor, George T. Stagg, Stagg
- Mash Bill #2 — higher rye. Blanton's, Elmer T. Lee, Rock Hill Farms, Hancock's President's Reserve, Ancient Age
- Wheated — wheat replacing rye. W.L. Weller line, Van Winkle line
- Rye whiskey — Sazerac Rye, Thomas H. Handy
That's the single most useful table in bourbon. It explains why Weller and Van Winkle taste related, and why Blanton's and Elmer T. Lee are cousins.
The warehouses. Buffalo Trace's rickhouses are lettered, and several have identities of their own. Warehouse H, metal-clad and fast-cycling, is where all Blanton's matures. Warehouse C famously survived a tornado in 2006 and lent its name to an E.H. Taylor release.

Wild Turkey — Lawrenceburg, Kentucky
Wild Turkey is the distillery that refused to chase trends, and it's aged well as a strategy. Jimmy Russell has been on the job since 1954 — one of the longest tenures in the industry — with his son Eddie Russell now working alongside him.
House character. Wild Turkey runs a lower barrel-entry proof than most of the industry, which means less water is added at bottling and more of the barrel's extracted character survives into the glass. The result is a house style with pronounced vanilla, oak, and a signature dusty-spice note that's recognizable across the range.

The Master's Keep series is Wild Turkey's limited annual release program, running since 2015, and each entry has explored something different — extended aging, finishing in other cask types, rye, and bottled-in-bond expressions among them. Because each release is a one-off, the series is heavily collected.
Heaven Hill — Bardstown and Louisville, Kentucky
Heaven Hill is the largest independent, family-owned spirits producer in the United States and holds one of the largest inventories of aging bourbon in the world.
The 1996 fire. On November 7, 1996, fire destroyed multiple rickhouses and the distillery itself, consuming a substantial volume of maturing stock. Heaven Hill contracted production with other distilleries before eventually acquiring the Bernheim distillery in Louisville, where it produces today. "Pre-fire" Heaven Hill distillate is a distinct and valuable collector category as a result.

Jim Beam — Clermont and Boston, Kentucky
The world's largest bourbon producer by volume, and the distillery that essentially invented the premium small batch category.
The Small Batch Collection, introduced in the early 1990s, was Booker Noe's argument that Beam could compete at the high end:
- Booker's — uncut, unfiltered, barrel proof, released in batches with the batch's own proof and age
- Baker's — now a single barrel release, historically a 7-year small batch
- Knob Creek — the volume success story of the group, with 9 Year, Single Barrel Reserve, and 12 Year expressions
- Basil Hayden — high-rye and low-proof, the gentlest of the four
That lineup created the template every other distillery's premium range now follows.
Willett — Bardstown, Kentucky
Willett is the enthusiast's distillery. The Kulsveen family revived the family distillery site and, for years, operated primarily as a bottler of sourced whiskey under the Willett Family Estate label — producing some of the most celebrated single barrels of the modern era in the process.
Willett resumed its own distillation in 2012, and the transition from sourced to house-distilled stock is central to how collectors evaluate the bottles. Willett Family Estate single barrels remain among the most sought-after releases in American whiskey, and the brand also produces Old Bardstown, Noah's Mill, Rowan's Creek, and Johnny Drum.
Sazerac — the parent company
Worth separating from Buffalo Trace, because people conflate them. Sazerac is a New Orleans–headquartered spirits company that owns Buffalo Trace along with many other brands and production sites, including Barton 1792 in Bardstown and A. Smith Bowman in Virginia.
When people say "Sazerac makes the Antique Collection," what they mean is that Sazerac owns the company whose Frankfort distillery produces it.
How to use this
Two practical applications:
Find value siblings. When an allocated bottle is unavailable, look for something from the same distillery and mash bill. The Weller line and the Van Winkle line share DNA. Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare share a recipe. Elmer T. Lee and Blanton's are cousins. You won't get the identical whiskey, but you'll get the same house character at a fraction of the difficulty.
Understand what you're paying for. When two bottles from the same distillery and mash bill differ by $200, the difference is age, barrel selection, proof, and scarcity — not a fundamentally different whiskey. Sometimes that's worth it. Knowing what the gap consists of lets you decide.
