Tasting Notes
Nose: A rich and inviting bouquet of caramelized brown sugar, vanilla bean, and toasted oak. Beneath these classic bourbon notes, hints of dried fruit (apricot, fig) emerge, intertwined with a delicate spiciness of cinnamon and old leather. A soft nuttiness, perhaps pecan or almond, provides further depth.
Palate: The entry is robust and full-bodied, delivering a beautiful balance of sweet and savory. A wave of dark caramel and buttery toffee washes over the tongue, quickly followed by a pleasant warmth from the 101 proof. Rich vanilla and crème brûlée intermingle with a peppery spice – black pepper, nutmeg, and a whisper of clove. The aged oak provides structure without overwhelming, presenting notes of char and a subtle tobacco leaf richness. A touch of ripe cherry or dark berry fruit adds complexity.
Finish: Long, satisfying, and lingering. The warmth slowly fades, leaving behind a delightful interplay of sweet oak, baking spices, and a faint cocoa powder bitterness. A final embrace of leather and well-integrated spice encourages another sip. The overall impression is one of mature elegance and classic Wild Turkey character.
About the Distillery
Austin, Nichols & Co. is the parent company behind Wild Turkey, and has a rich history in American whiskey, predating Prohibition. While the Austin, Nichols name itself was primarily a grocer and distributor, they acquired distilleries and eventually founded the Wild Turkey brand as we know it today. Since 1905, they have been a cornerstone of Kentucky bourbon, known for their high-rye mash bill and preference for deeper char levels in their barrels, contributing to the bold and distinctive flavor profile that defines Wild Turkey.
